Hey guys, welcome The Higher Note where we talk about music new and old what makes them great and why we love them!
Today I wanted to talk about the Solo EP of Jim Adkins, Lead Singer and Guitarist for Jimmy Eat World! You’ll most likely know them from the song The Middle, and I’m a pretty big fan of this band.
What I was expecting was something similar to his solo tours with a lot of gentle acoustic tracks. What I got wasn’t wildly different but the first song I Will go had a little something extra… horns. (close up weird face horn sound)
Jim Adkins has a fine voice that can meld between energetic rock and slower alternative melodies, but personally I don’t think his vocal style fits well with horns in a perky pacing.
The track Hell is like a melding of three of their albums with a base tempo and road trippy vibe reminding me of damages, a tinker toy break down reminiscent of heart is hard on Invented and a sick guitar riff that could belong on bleed American.
But my favorite will always be the slow mellow and meaningful taking me to love don’t wait, your classic empty bar somber tune. Emotions sweet yet melancholy passionately spills from this track in the element all too familiar with the band I grew to love
From the Covers I’ll have to go with Becks Don’t act like your heart isn’t hard. I think he did the best with this song to make it his own. And these lyrics really are perfect for Jimmy too.
Give Me a Sweetheart’s abrasive background riffs were too rough for me. And I wasn’t crazy about the multi-vocal effect in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
Overall Jim did enough to stay tried and true to his style for some really fulfilling tracks while his experiments were hit or miss, and I think this little project was done a lot for himself and for the songs he enjoys!
So with that said I’m giving this Jim Adkins Solo EP a rating of EP
If you’re interested in taking a listen my top recommendations are Hell and Love Don’t Wait.
Thanks for joining me and my farewell quote for the day will be:
“The paralyzing truth, I am what I will choose.” – Jim Adkins (I Will Go)
