Steven Universe Season 2 Episode 20 Review Back to the Barn – What is a Pearl?
Welcome back to another Steven Universe review. In this episode Paradot has just revealed information on the cluster to the gems. After it’s threat and location are confirmed they plan to build a machine to go to the center of the Earth.
The most interesting part of this episode is uncovering an establishment of classes and discrimination of gem races on the home world. Paradot describes Pearl and all pearls as nothing more than elegant servants.
Though this is a negative topic, it is a very important one unveiled for legitimizing Pearl’s inferiority complex. One moment that comes to mind is her confrontation with Garnet in Season 2 Episode 18 that I originally thought of as selfish victimization. Another example is when Pearl trained Connie to sword fight, she referred to herself as nothing and let herself get severely damaged multiple times to defend Rose Quartz. Now we know that it is not only her personality, but an entire world who told her that she is nothing.
With this information I have come to a new theory about Pearl’s life on home world. Perhaps Pearl was the servant of Rose Quartz. While other gems flaunted superiority over the pearls, Rose expressed love, acceptance, and encouragement to Pearl. This would explain her love for Rose, yet still her nature to sacrifice herself for Rose on every occasion.
After the impressive feats of Pearl’s machine and seeing the compassion of the other gems Paradot excepts Pearl’s help as an equal to build the machine.
As more pieces unfold we are seeing how tyrannically structured home world really was. But let us know your thoughts on this latest episode!
