Guardians of the Galaxy Review: Action, Unity, and non stop laughs!
Since the revival of the superhero genre, Marvel has exploded in the film industry, and Guardians of the Galaxy marked their first lesser known comic franchise to hit the big screen. Many people including myself thought their was a great deal of risk to spotlighting a team so far from the popularity of Iron Man and Captain America, titans of the comic world even before the release of their films. However marvel has hit its mark harder than ever with it’s incomprehensible hot streak of comic to film adaptations in the current generation.
Without a doubt these heroes profiles and personalities are much less conventional than the typical Marvel super heroes it just makes it all the more intriguing to see each one of them plant their feet into this new vast universe.
Of all the stunning performances, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star Lord) was nothing short of perfection. For those unaware of Parks and Recreation, they may not have realized just how perfect for this role he was, though many of us had now doubt about the incredible performance would ensue since his face hit the first trailer. In short you can describe Chris Pratt as a lovable goofball who has a magical touch on every line that should make a character look dumb, into something very witty. In short he’s a comedic genius who set the sail on this action packed space ship of quality humor. Place this lovable actor into the hot suit of the Starlord character and you see a very well rounded character whose not only funny but also a man full of adventure and sentiment revolving around his mysterious awesome mix volume 1 tape.
Not that any of the other members can be short changed. Rocket Racoon was an all around brilliant character with his genius of weaponry combined with smartass attitude all compact in a little furry package.
Not since The Terminator has a character with so few lines had so much success. Every “I am Groot” uttered left everyone in stitches, while every action and reaction made him insurmountably adorable.
Drax is probably the most straight forward super hero that you will ever see. Taking every sentence literal, butts heads with sarcasm with extreme literary grace, sternness and warrior joy.
Rounding out the bottom of the comedy wagon will be Gamora. Despite showing the least comedic performance she makes up for it, by probably being the most skilled in combat as well as having the greatest tie in to additional pieces of the marvel universe.
While the plot of the movie was very interesting and left you on the edge of your seat, more than ever, it seems the marvel universe is trying to tie in pieces A LOT of its other franchises. This narrative method is a double edge sword, as it is beautiful to see them tie in so many different stories so elegantly, often times I found myself forgetting that this is indeed a standalone movie now vigilant for constant cameos from other or even new franchises that are being hinted.
In this sense I’d say the story alone was much weaker than others because constant hints and reveals just kept us getting more excited for the future while slowly forgetting the present. I’m sure numerous fans will agree with me when I say that no one really cared about Ronan and just wanted Thanos to get out of his chair and start kicking major tail. Even the major conflict of the film involving the infinity stone was bluntly belittled half way through the movie showing a much larger scheme that was beyond the scope of this particular film.
Overall this movie is still a success despite its odd (highly debatable) choice of narrative style, the characters personas and behaviors alone kept you engaged every blink of the film. Not only do they provide laughs, but their unison and merged resources of combat and knowledge prove to be the greatest weapon of all, to be feared by all evildoers. And make no mistake even though the story has trouble staying in its own movie, you’ll love the crazy amount of hintings and cameos it gives, especially to you original marvel comic fans. This is a movie that absolutely cannot be missed and its entertainment rivals that of Avengers. How much does it rival Avengers?…. hehe well that’s for another article.
Guardians of the Galaxy is now playing!
